Something most recently popularized in Post Malone’s work, Free Form writing is when your song structure is very loose, or follows little to no repetitive form at all; eight bars or this, 11 bars of that, the chorus not always falling in the same place after the verse, etc. In modern music it usually is represented as a song with no repetitive verse structures, and with the chorus still remaining somewhat, or completely the same each time.
The second of two articles on time management, we switch gears today to focus on workflow tips and strategies, based on the writer’s years of experience.

For metal music, I recommend getting a solid state amp because, while tubes can certainly achieve a heavy sound, at high levels of distortion for long periods of time, solid state amps are much more reliable. You don’t have to rely on the amp’s own effects so much, since in metal you’re likely to have more than a few pedals in your chain, but its electronics need to handle the load. Here are some of my favorite choices for playing metal music:
It’s always better to move at a steady pace than to try to do everything all at once. In addition, once the people you work with understand that you prioritize quality over quantity, they will respect you and value your time and dedication to your craft.
We usually expect the energy to be at peak level in the chorus, but the matter of what “peak level” actually means is open for debate. In most cases, the chorus or drop sections will be the loudest parts of the song, but there are some producers out there who play with our emotions every now and then, and delay that ultimate satisfaction. You might want to go with the approach of creating a very busy pre-chorus that can potentially lead to an even busier chorus, but then leave listeners with a minimalist, stripped-down chorus which somehow counterintuitively hits really hard.

I’ll let you in on an industry secret: Most voiceovers you hear on adverts, movies, and TV shows have been recorded by a pro voiceover talent from their home. How do I know this? Because I’ve personally set up a substantial amount of the country’s top voiceover talents’ studios in New York City over the last ten years. Unless you want to build a booth in a spare room (which I would recommend but it can get pricey), it’s usually easier and cheaper to use the tools you already have.
